Fast and Furious 7 (Movie Review)

I am not the biggest fan of The Fast and The Furious films. In fact I only love 5 and 6. So, when it was announced that a 7th one was confirmed, I actually was excited. I was excited because the movies got better and better and they know exactly what they are. Dumb, fun action movies. Or just a great time at the movies.

And then, it was announced that Jason Statham was the villain, I got even more excited because I am a huge fan of his. And then came the tragic news that Paul Walker sadly passed away in a car accident.

So, the film had massive hype. And was it worth it? YES!

The film was epic in scale, epic in action and epic in emotional characters as well. Let’s start with the scale. The film again knows what it’s suppose to be and that is a great time at the movies. The film is just non stop entertainment from start to finish. You are on the edge of your seat from start to finish and it comes to a point where it is just too damn fun. In a GREAT WAY!

The whole team is back with new additions of Kurt Russell and Nathale Emmanuel. They are both great in the film. They add more character and plot elements towards the film which help make it work.

Kurt Russell is just having fun in this role and it is just great to see him back on the big screen.

Jason Statham as Deckard Shaw is just excellent. He was born to play a role like this. He is after revenge and he is after Dom’s team. Every time he shows up on screen, you can’t help but to scream and shout.

He is menacing and very cerebral as well. He knows what he has to do in order to get what he wants. He has this menacing presence in the film that makes the film even more suspenseful.

The fight scenes (there are a lot) are well directed and choregraphed. They become fresher and fresher each time when there is a new fight scene on screen. You can tell that they had planned the fights from the start and it makes the film more suspenseful.

And of course we have to talk about Paul Walker. He sadly passed away half way through filming and that required CGI work. They did the same method on how they did it with Oliver Reed when he sadly died during filming for Gladiator.

I couldn’t believe just how much I didn’t notice the CGI. I only noticed it once and that is a great sign as there are many CGI shots of Paul Walker.

And the ending has a brilliant tribute to Paul and it does make you weep. So prepare to take some tissues with you.

As for negatives. There are two major ones. One is that Dwayne Johnson is barely in the film. His character made 5 and 6 great and him not showing up as much downgraded the film a bit for me.

And the film is by a new director James Wan. 5 and 6 and even 3 and 4 were directed brilliantly by Justin Lin. I did really like James Wan’s direction, but I felt like that there wasn’t many smooth shots as how Justin Lin did with his films.

There were many shaky cam shots for which I dislike extensively. But this is his first big budget action film as he is known for his smaller budget horror films. Still a great job for his first big budget blockbuster.

Overall, Furious 7 is a great time at the movies and a film that you must see on the biggest screen possible.
